Director and writer of District 9 has recently come out with some harsh words on his previous work Elysium.

Even though it was hotly anticipated and expectations were high for Elysium, Neill Blomkamp’s film released after his critically acclaimed film District 9, the movie failed to meet expectations on many fronts. Moviegoers were excited to see if the filmmaker could knock another one out of the park like he did with the fresh and original District 9. However, the film ultimately flopped in the box offices and was admittedly weaker than his 2009 counterpart.

Blomkamp might be his own worst critic though. In a recent interview with UpRoxx, the director came out and said that he would remake that movie if he could.

From UpRoxx:

"“I fee like I fucked up. I feel like ultimately the story is not the right story. I still think the satirical idea of a ring filled with rich people hovering above the impoverished Earth is an awesome idea. I love it so much, I almost want to go back and do it correctly. But I just think the script wasn’t… I just didn’t make a good enough film is ultimately what it is. I feel like I executed all of the stuff that could be executed, like costume and set design and special effects very well. But ultimately it was all resting on a somewhat not totally formed skeletal system, so the script just wasn’t there…”"

Honestly, it’s pretty refreshing to hear a filmmaker who is willing to admit that something he made was simply not the best he could have done it and not everything was there to make it a great movie. He went on to comment on this attitude saying, “That’s what leads to good artists though – like, the audience owes you nothing. The audience will tear you apart if you don’t provide a product.”

Recently, Blomkamp has announced that he will soon be working on a new Alien film for Fox. The film will be a departure from more recent Alien installments in that it will practically ignore everything that has happened after Aliens. I say, why not? It worked for Bryan Singer and the X-Men movies. Also joining Blomkamp is the legendary Sigourney Weaver reprising her iconic role of Ellen Ripley.
