Despite reports to the contrary, the Green Bay Packers still very much want to re-sign receiver Randall Cobb.

The Green Bay Packers want budding star receiver Randall Cobb on their team for more playoff runs. They know it will cost a pretty penny so the team is making him and tackle Bryan Bulaga a priority, per ESPN Wisconsin, which also reports that thisĀ  was the plan all along, despite earlier reports to the contrary.

Despite talk that Cobb could ask for north of $9 million per year in salary, the Packers have not balked and could very well pay the 24-year-old receiver what he wants. Why? Because he’s arguably the best receiver Aaron Rodgers has thrown to in his career and he’s just getting started.

Cobb has the potential to grow with Rodgers and the rest of this offense for a long time and the fact isn’t lost on the Packers, who have already put big money into the position with Jordy Nelson. In Cobb’s case, as with Nelson, the money could be worth it.

Randall Cobb tallied 91 catches for 1,287 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2014, his fourth in the NFL. It was his best season and it came after a frustrating, injury-riddled 2013 season in which Cobb only played in six games. This year he showed what he could do when fully healthy and now he’s going to get paid because of that.

Cobb took to Twitter to cryptically suggest that contract talks were continuing as well.

For the Packers, retaining the supporting cast for Aaron Rodgers remains vital while Rodgers sits squarely in the prime of his career. That’s why ESPN Wisconsin notes that Cobb and right tackle Bryan Bulaga remain the team’s top priority in negotiations.

If the Packers are willing to keep Randall Cobb with a franchise tag designation, they would have until 3PM on Monday, March 2 to do so.

The Packers probably make the most sense for Cobb as well. While he could certainly go out and fetch a huge sum in free agency from a team with lots of cap space, he would likely take a step back on the field as a result as he wouldn’t have Aaron Rodgers throwing to him.

With word that Harry Douglas and Bryan Hartline have hit the free agency wire as well, teams could have better value options than Cobb, which should bring things full circle for him and the Packer.
