The Miami Dolphins are in the process of making over the wide receiver position and Mike Wallace could be the latest casualty after the former high-priced free agent is not inclined to restructure his contract.

With the NFL Scouting Combine over and teams now focused on planning for the start of free agency, that means a number of veterans will be handed their walking papers and released.

The Miami Dolphins were busy on Friday with the releasing of veteran receivers Brian Hartline and Brandon Gibson as they look to free up salary cap space for a team far over the cap.

With only two teams in a worse cap situation than the Dolphins, the team was hoping to restructure the contract of receiver Mike Wallace who has three years and $32.9 million remaining on the five-year, $60 million deal he signed two years ago.

Wallace has been a massive disappointment on the field with 140 receptions for 1,792 and 15 touchdowns in two seasons in Miami. After averaging 17.2 yards per reception in the first four years of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Wallace hasn’t shown the big-play ability that got him paid with a 12.8 yards per catch average with the Dolphins.

What’s worse is his football character and attitude after he reportedly quit on his teammates at halftime of a game last December.

According to the Sun Sentinel’s Omar Kelly, Wallace doesn’t want to restructure his contract which could lead to him being released if the team is unable to trade him.

"Sources tell the Sun Sentinel that Wallace has told the Dolphins he will not restructure the final three years and $32.9 million left on his contract. Wallace, who has expressed his displeasure with the Dolphins’ conservative offense, would rather test the free-agent market than re-work the details of his contract, which pays him $9.9 million in 2015, including $3 million of that guaranteed on March 15."

No team is going to take on the years and dollars remaining on his contract,  especially when they know he will be cut at some point int he offseason. So the writing is on the wall for Wallace to end up on the free agent market where he found himself two years ago.

However, he won’t be getting anything close to the money he got when the Dolphins foolishly made Wallace one of the highest-paid players in the NFL.
