PGA Tour player and current world No. 1 golfer Rory McIlroy thinks the United States looks a little desperate to win a Ryder Cup.Ā

Rory McIlroy is the No. 1 golfer in the world and is from Northern Ireland. The 26-year-old world class golfer has spent the last three Ryder Cup tournaments on the European team, and has helped Team Europe win all three by scoring 2 points in 2010 and 3 point in 2012 and 2014.

Rory McIlroy is back in PGA Tour action this week at the Honda Classic (where he’s going to miss the cut), but he’s also talking about the United States’ Ryder Cup task force and how the U.S. seems to be taking everything a bit overboard. Rory said he was surprised when Davis Love III was selected as the 2016 U.S. Ryder Cup captain. Love III was captain for the U.S. in 2012 when they went into the final day up 10-6 in points and ended up losing 14.5-13.5.

ā€œI feel they’re overdoing it, with the setting up of a task force and talking about all the changes they want to bring in,ā€ McIlroy said, via Golf.com. ā€œIt’s been said by a few players since we won at Gleneagles that it’s not rocket science why Europe has won the last three Ryder Cups and eight of the past 10…

ā€œI do get the sense the States, what with their task force and everything that came out in the announcement yesterday, that they’re desperate to win back the Ryder Cup.ā€

While the PGA of America does seem to be taking crazy steps to try and secure a Ryder Cup win, I don’t think you can blame them. Does McIlroy honestly not think that Europe would be doing the same thing if they lost eight of the last 10 to the United States?

The PGA of America set up the task force and set up rule changes for the U.S. to avoid the derailment that happened last year to the United States Ryder Cup team when Tom Watson was made captain. Watson made questionable decisions onĀ picking for the team when he told a majority of the automatically qualified guys he was planning to take Bill Haas but ended up taking Webb Simpson who was horrendous in the cup. Watson also apparently got into it with players during the tournament because of questionable calls on who to sit and who to play.

Mickelson was among these players who took offense when Watson didn’t play him or Bradley at all in the second day of group play. This decision from Watson came when he played Bradley and Mickelson’s pairing twice on Friday despite them being the last to finish and he sat the pairing of Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed who had dominated earlier in the morning. Mickelson and Bradley were clearly out of gas when they lost their afternoon round and Watson chose to bench them for the entirety of the third day.

This frustration boiled over in the press conference after Team Europe won their third straight cup 16.5-11.5, when Mickelson called out Watson during the team press conference which created an awkward situation that eventually led to the PGA of America creating a task force so that none of this happened again.

Davis Love III and the United States team will have their work cut out for them next year, and definitely a lot of pressure will be added after the task force chose Love and the cup will be played on American soil in Hazeltine.
