The Dallas Cowboys will place the franchise tag on wide receiver Dez Bryant on Monday.
The Dallas Cowboys were trying to work out a long-term deal with star wide receiver Dez Bryant to prevent him from hitting free agency, but these haven’t been your typical negotiations. While he is clearly one of the best wide receivers in the league making miraculous catches to keep their season alive, some that counted and some that should of but didn’t, there have been other hurdles.

The clock has been winding down though, with the window to place franchise tags on players before they hit free agency coming on Monday.
“I still think that it’s probably, you know, would be a stretch to think that we would have something done by Monday and beat the franchise-tag deadline,” Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones said, via FOX Sports Southwest. “Looks like we’re eyeing a franchise tag on Dez, but certainly won’t stop us from working hard to get a long-term deal.”
The Cowboys weren’t going to risk Bryant testing the waters and entertaining offers from other team and will place the franchise tag with him on Monday.
“We just don’t want to lose his rights,” said Jones. “We think Dez is a, you know, unique player and certainly a big part of what we do in terms of what we’ve done, our success, and certainly going forward.
“You know, we got a long period of time there where we can work, continue to work on doing something long term for Dez.”
In the mean time, you can see why the Cowboys are willing to slap the tag on Bryant and give him a huge overloaded single season contract, though they’d likely still try to work on a long-term deal.
