Miguel Cotto to sign with Roc Nation Sports
By Ryan Lehrman
Boxing champion Miguel Cotto is expected to sign with Jay-Z’s Rock Nation Sports on Thursday morning.
The elite list of Roc Nation Sports is about to get a little big longer as Boxer Miguel Cotto plans to sign with the Jay-Z-led sports management company on ESPN “First Take” Thursday morning, according to the New York Daily News.
Cotto, the WBC Middleweight Champion, will be only the second boxer to join Roc Nation Sports, alongside super-middle weight champ Andre Ward who signed at the beginning of the year.
The deal marks a first step in an otherwise cloudy future for Cotto. The 34-year-old Puerto Rican champ has kept the boxing world on edge as he has yet to announce his next fight, though many speculate he’ll return June 13 at New York’s Madison Square Garden during Puerto Rican Day Parade.

For the past couple of years, Cotto remained a free agent but stayed close to boxing promotional company Top Rank. He and Top Rank president Todd duBoef have had a tight relationship since duBoef signed him after the 2000 Olympics. However, duBoef recently expressed disappointment in his former partner’s conduct and business decisions, to no surprise.
On the winner’s side of the ring, the pact is much-welcomed news for empire builder Jay-Z after Roc Nation’s bid with power broker Al Haymon failed in 2014. While Roc Nation is a brand-new player in the boxing game, it is no stranger to star-studded talent. Other famous names on the hip hop kingpin’s roster include Dallas Cowboys’ Dez Bryant, Detroit Lions’ Ndamukong Suh, Boston Red Sox’s Rusney Castillo and Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant.
In other words, Cotto will be in good company. He defeated Sergio Martinez to earn the middleweight champion’s belt last June, and it appears his premier status continues to rise.
Meanwhile, the promoter for WBA Middleweight Champion Gannady Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs) is looking to organize a fight between Golovkin and Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs).
Boxing fans have to continue to wait for Cotto’s next fight, but his anticipated partnership will surely be the talk of the town after the announcement on ESPN tomorrow morning.
