Derek Jeter is the latest on a star-studded list of New York Yankees players to retire. Jeter played his last season in 2014, where he appeared in his 14th All-Star game in his 20-year career with the Yankees who drafted him sixth overall in the 1992 Amateur Draft. Jeter spent 2003-2014 as captain of the Yankees and GM Brian Cashman said Thursday he’d like to see the captaincy retire with him.
Jeter was the first Yankees captain since Don Mattingly retired as captain of the team in 1995. In a radio interview with Mike Lupica Thursday, Cashman talked about Jeter and the Yankees captaincy according to the New York Daily News:
"“As far as I’m concerned, and I’m not the decision maker on this, that captaincy should be retired with No. 2,” Cashman said. “I wouldn’t give up another captain’s title to anyone else.”The Yankees GM said making that a reality would be the owner’s call, not his, adding that Jeter was “so perfect” for the role.“Leadership comes in a lot of forms, it would be a hard one to anoint someone captain,” Cashman continued, “regardless of how great they might be.”"
There have been 15 captains in the history of the New York Yankees baseball team, most notably, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig who are both in the Baseball Hall of Fame where Jeter will undeniably join them in the coming years. Will Jeter be the final captain of the New York Yankees?
