Fantasy Impact: Matt Cassel Traded To The Bills
By Bruce Matson
The Bills were at it again on the trade market by trading for Matt Cassel earlier this week. The Bills wanted to add a veteran quarterback to their roster to compete with EJ Manuel. Cassel recorded a 10 win season in 2008 while filling in for injured Tom Brady. Cassel has thrown for 15,727 and 96 touchdowns during his career.

Cassel goes from having no fantasy value to having a little bit of fantasy value. In redraft leagues Cassel isn’t going to get drafted, and he’s only going to have value as a weekly streaming option. In dynasty Cassel has no value in the trade market, but he can serve as a backup quarterback if your team is in need of one.EJ Manuel
EJ Manuel’s value is very similar to Cassel’s fantasy value. Manuel’s redraft value is dependent on whether or not he can beat out Cassel in training camp. If he gets the starting job he’s still not going to be draftable in redraft leagues, but he will be serviced as a weekly streamer. In dynasty, Manuel goes from an end of bench quarterback option to and end of bench quarterback option that you might have to possibly cut before the season. Manuel is a hold right now because he currently doesn’t have any trade value. You might as well hold and see if he can win the starting job.
Sammy Watkins
This doesn’t affect Watkins value in redraft or dynasty. We knew before the trade happened that Watkins wasn’t going to have a good quarterback for this year. Watkins is going to be drafted based on athletic upside in the middle of the rounds in redraft leagues. In dynasty, Watkins is very valuable. He is currently going in the 1st and 2nd rounds of startup drafts. There is a chance you could buy low on Watkins because of his quarterback situation, but it’s highly unlikely. More than likely it will cost an arm and a leg to acquire him. He will be 22 years old heading into next season, so he has a good 6-10 years of production in fantasy. Watkins is going to be the number 1 receiver for the Bills, and he’s going to get plenty of targets. Even with dismal QB play, I look for him to finish in the top 25 this year at his position.
LeSean McCoy
McCoy is going to be the workhorse of the Bills offense. The addition of Cassel isn’t going to do anything to prevent that. McCoy is currently going in the 2nd round of startup drafts in dynasty, and the news of Cassel going to the Bills isn’t going to affect his draft position. McCoy is going to be a strong RB1 this year because he is going to get one of the heaviest workloads in the NFL. The only thing that could hurt his fantasy production would be if he got injured.
