The Green Bay Packers have reportedly “balked” at wide receiver Randall Cobb’s asking price, and will likely not re-sign him this offseason.

Randall Cobb is one of the most talented free agents on the market this offseason, and the Green Bay Packers were hoping to be able to bring him back. That doesn’t appear to be a likely scenario anymore, as they have reported “balked” at his asking price.

That would make it seem like the Packers are already moving on from the idea of re-signing their young star wide receiver. Losing Cobb would be tough for Green Bay, but they have a talented receiver in Davante Adams to help replace him. Green Bay would also be active in free agency and the draft finding help to replace him if they do end up losing him.

During the 2014 season, Cobb caught 91 passes for 1,287 yards and 12 touchdowns. At just 24-years-old, Cobb has an incredibly bright future and has the chance to become one of the top-five wide receivers in the game. His speed in the open field and versatility make him a very dangerous player anywhere on the field.

Aaron Rodgers and Cobb built great chemistry last season with each other, and it’s too bad that Cobb is searching for a couple more million per season than returning and competing for a championship.

Green Bay has seen receivers take this route in the past, as recently as Greg Jennings leaving to sign in Minnesota. That move hasn’t worked out for Jennings, and leaving Green Bay for a team like the Oakland Raiders likely wouldn’t work out for Cobb either. It would be a very intriguing fit, but the Packers are without a doubt the best situation for Cobb.

Oakland will be willing to pay big money for a legitimate number one receiver as the report states. Derek Carr needs another target, and Cobb would be the best player he’s played with by far.

All of that being said, everything is just a rumor until a deal is announced. Green Bay would still like to re-sign Cobb if they can bring him back at the right price, but that doesn’t appear likely at this point in time. Fans should begin preparing themselves to see Cobb leave town this offseason, and Ted Thompson will have some decisions to make.

Expect to see the Packers be very active in free agency, but whether or not they will end up spending big money is another question.
