Panthers sign Greg Olsen to three-year extension
By Mike Dyce
The Carolina Panthers and tight end Greg Olsen agree to a three-year extension.
Last year the Carolina Panthers allowed their receivers to walk away and find new homes, drying up the options for quarterback Cam Newton. Going into 2015, the Panthers weren’t bound to let another option for Newton to slip away and locked down tight end Greg Olsen to a three-year extension.
Agent Drew Rosenhaus announced the news on his Twitter account.
ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter added more details, saying the extension was worth $22.5 million and included a $12 million signing bonus.
Olsen is just days away from his 30th birthday, but doesn’t look to be slowing after a career year in 2014. He had 84 catches for 1,008 yards receiving, both career highs. He also added six touchdowns.
Olsen has been significantly better in his time in Carolina than his previous tenure in Chicago with the Bears. He certainly has proven to be a reliable and important target for Newton.
His 1,008 yards receiving were tied with Kelvin Benjamin for the most on the team. His 122 targets were second to only Benjamin.
