Rory McIlroy played a very inconsistent round Thursday at the WGC Cadillac Championship in Doral that led to a 73 finish.

After Rory McIlroy missed the cut in his 2015 U.S. debut at the Honda Classic last week, worrisome questions quickly arose to which McIlroy chalked his struggles up to taking time off. In the first round of the World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship Thursday, his struggles continued.

Rory McIlroy started on the back nine at Doral Thursday, and finished off his first nine holes with a 4-over par, 40. Yikes.

But, Rory was able to grab three strokes back on an inconsistent front nine where he hit par on the first three holes and then finished birdie-birdie-bogey-birdie-eagle-bogey to finish 1-over par on the round.

Not a terrible start, but not typical McIlroy either. The 25-year-old golfer was a superstar in 2014 when he won three events back-to-back-to-back last summer: The British Open Championship, the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational, and then his second career PGA Championship victory. The two majors he won in 2014 added to his 2011 U.S. Open victory and his 2012 PGA victory. This quality play led McIlroy to takeover the No. 1 spot in the world.

“I expect a lot from myself, but you know, shooting 1‑over par out there today isn’t too bad,” McIlroy said after his round according to USA Today. “It’s obviously not what I wanted. But there’s no reason to panic and no reason to be alarmed. I’ll just go out tomorrow and try and put some red numbers on the board.”

Leading the field after day one at Doral is J.B. Holmes who shot an outstanding 10-under par, 62 and leads Ryan Moore by four strokes.
