Longtime Daily Show correspondent Samantha Bee will leave the show to star in her own comedy series on TBS
And the cast exodus from The Daily Show continues. Since host Jon Stewart announced that he was leaving Comedy Central’s long-running fake news show to pursue something, anything else, a number of his cast members have opted to jump ship along with him.

First came the announcement that Jason Jones, who had been contributing to the show for nearly 10 years, was leaving to star on a TBS sitcom about family road trips that sounded an awful lot like an unofficial remake of National Lampoon’s Vacation. Questionable legality notwithstanding, Jones created that show with his wife Samantha Bee, which led to speculation that she might be leaving as well. At the time, Comedy Central said that Bee would be “remaining with” The Daily Show.
Well, Comedy Central lied. Or Bee lied to Comedy Central. I don’t know. Somebody lied, because Deadline is reporting that Bee will leave The Daily Show to produce and star in her own TBS comedy series, which has nothing to do with the other TBS comedy series her husband will star in.
For it’s part, TBS seems pretty pleased with itself for managing to woo the husband-and-wife team away from Comedy Central. “We actually have their kids coming in next week to pitch us animation,” said TBS VP Brett Weitz, adorably. “Like her fans around the country, we absolutely adore everything about Sam, from her straight-faced sarcasm and ruthless wit to her uncanny ability to mine comedy gold from just about any awkward situation. After watching Sam’s work for years, we knew that her distinctive humor and talent belong at the front of her own show.”
There’s no word on what Bee’s new show will be like, but there’s got to be at least one Comedy Central executive who’s secretly hoping it will fail. “Then she’ll be sorry,” he’ll think as he dabs his tears away with bits of paper towel. “Stop being stupid, Derek.” This executive’s name is Derek.
Bee joined The Daily Show in 2003, which makes her its longest-serving correspondent. Her departure obviously takes her out of the running to replace Stewart as host, but it’s assumed that she’ll continue to act as a correspondent until her career as a TBS comedy luminary gets off the ground. In the meantime, Derek has a tough time ahead of him looking for people to fill the shoes of all the departing Daily Show cast members.
