Brian Hoyer is one of the top free agent quarterbacks this year and could be the next starting quarterback for the Houston Texans.

The Cleveland Browns aren’t bringing back Brian Hoyer after he went 7-6 in 13 starts last year after the team signed Josh McCown to a three-year deal, but where could the 29-year-old veteran find a home in 2015?

Hoyer could be reunited with his former quarterbacks coach when he broke into the league with the New England Patriots and join Bill O’Brien with the Houston Texans.

O’Brien was Hoyer’s quarterbacks coach his first two years in the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Michigan State and the offensive coordinator of the Patriots his last year in New England in 2011 before moving to the Arizona Cardinals and spending the last two years with the Browns.

According to CBS Sports NFL insider Jason La Canfora, based on how the free agent market looks today, he expects Hoyer to slot in nicely with the Texans.

Hoyer started strong for the Browns last year with a 6-3 record in the first nine games with 10 touchdowns to only four interceptions before fading down the stretch. Hoyer went 1-3 in the next four games with one touchdown and eight interceptions.

The only game the Browns in that stretch was a 26-24 win over the Atlanta Falcons when Hoyer threw three interceptions. He was benched in favor of first round pick, Johnny Manziel who lasted one full game before being injured in the 15th game.

Hoyer is best as a backup quarterback who can step in for an injured starter for a game or a few weeks if necessary and keep the team afloat, but as a full-time starter, he has his flaws and they were exposed the longer he was on the field with the Browns last year.

Should La Canfora’s prediction hold true, that would make for an interesting quarterback battle with Ryan Mallett potentially being re-signed and Ryan Fitzpatrick still in the picture, although he could be released if the team signs Hoyer.
