Key Additions

  • OF Marlon Byrd
  • SP Anthony DeSclafani

Key Losses

  • SP Mat Latos
  • SP Alfredo Simon

Like previously mentioned, the offseason for Walt Jocketty disappointed many in Cincinnati. By far their only decent grab on paper comes in the form of veteran outfielder Marlon Byrd.

The 37-year old is still, amazingly on top of his game. Thanks to Sandy Alderson and the New York Mets giving a Byrd a shot in 2013 he has re-energized his career.

Last season for the Philadelphia Phillies, Byrd smashed 25 home runs and drove in 85 runs. He’ll provide some secondary power in the lineup.

The only other notable movement to speak of came early in the winter when starting pitchers Mat Latos and Alfredo Simon were traded away for youth. Latos could turn out to be a decent hole to fill as his career 3.34 earned run average and 8.1 strikeouts per nine-innings pitched isn’t an easy thing to find, especially how stingy this pitching market is.

Anthony DeSclafani, part of what the the Miami Marlins gave up for Latos, is slated to pitch out of the number-five spot in the rotation right now. At 24-years old and still very raw, it could set up a dicey situation early in the season.
