Fantasy Impact: Brandon Marshall Traded To The Jets

facebooktwitterreddit

Another big trade went down that impacted some fantasy player values, and that was Brandon Marshall being traded to the New York Jets. There were rumors floating around that the Bears were shopping Marshall around for a mid-round pick. The Bears had to settle for settle trading Marshall to the Jets for a 5th round pick. By trading Marshall, the Bears are able to create $4 million in cap space.

Brandon Marshall WR New York Jets

The New York Jets is one of the worst places for a wide receiver to land for fantasy purposes. Jets QB Geno Smith isn’t a very accurate quarterback, and the offense as a whole isn’t very explosive. Marshall is going to be 31 years old heading into the 2015 season, which means he is heading towards the downside of his career. Marshall started to show his age last season by being in and out of the lineup with injuries. Marshall’s ceiling in fantasy took a hit because the Jets offense isn’t very efficient and the quality of targets that Marshall will receive won’t be very good. Marshall will slip in redraft to the mid-rounds and could be a sneaky value play.

In dynasty, Marshall’s value was very low compared to his talent level before the trade happened, and now it appears that his value will drop even further. Before the trade, Marshall was going anywhere between the 4th-6th rounds in startup drafts. In a recent startup I did he went 53 overall (5.5 12 team league). If I owned him, I would be trying to sell him. I would put out 10 offers to my league mates and see what I would get in return.  Marshall is 31 years old. The drop off point for his talent level is going to come sooner than later, and typically going to a new team isn’t good for wide receivers, especially older ones.

Geno Smith QB New York Jets

This trade is going to help him drastically because it gives him an experienced pass catcher to throw to. Geno is going to be undraftable in redraft leagues, but he’s going to be valuable as a weekly stream when he plays favorable matchups. In dynasty, Geno is an end of bench flier that you are using to fill bye weeks. He is likely on the waiver wire in a lot of leagues.

Eric Decker WR New York Jets

This trade might help Decker’s value because it takes a lot of pressure off of him. He will be less likely to face double coverage, and he’s back to being the 2nd wide receiver on the team, a position where he had success playing for the Denver Broncos. Decker is going to be a trendy mid-late round pick in redraft, who could pose as a solid flex play. In dynasty, Decker might be a player you might want to try and buy because the owner that currently owns him could possibly be down on him due to the trade, and you may get a discount.

Percy Harvin WR New York Jets

It appears he is going to be cut, so his value in redraft and dynasty is going to drop. There’s a chance his value could rise if he gets picked up by a team with a favorable situation for him.

Alshon Jeffrey WR Chicago Bears

Jeffrey is one of the best wide receivers in the league, and his value is going to maintain. He is going to be drafted in the first 3 rounds in redraft this summer, and he’s currently going in the late-1st to early 2nd round in dynasty. I don’t see his value slipping at all from this.

Marquess Wilson WR Chicago Bears

Wilson is the clear cut winner of this trade. He was a trendy end of bench stash last year in dynasty leagues, and if you held on to him you are going to reap the rewards. Wilson is a big wide receiver who can get deep down the field, and he’s very agile for his size with an elite 6.65 3-cone. Due to some off the field concerns, Wilson fell to the Bears in the 7th round. Wilson is going to have the golden opportunity of playing on the opposite side of Alshon Jeffrey, where he will experience a lot of single coverage. Wilson missed most of last season due to a broken collar bone, but got some opportunity to play during the end of the season. Wilson finished the season with 17 receptions for 140 yards and 1 TD. Wilson is going to be a late round draft pick in redraft next year, and will be a trendy upside play for the end of your bench. Wilson is currently going in the 10th-12th round of dynasty leagues and his value should increase a few rounds since he’s going to get this opportunity. The Bears appear to be cleaning house before starting a massive rebuild, so this might impact the potency of the Bears offense. If you get a trade offer you like for Wilson, don’t be afraid to pull the trigger on it.

Martellus Bennett TE Chicago Bears

Bennett’s value is going to be high in redraft because he’s going to be heavily targeted with Marshall out of the picture. He is going to be a game changer in PPR leagues next year. In dynasty, Bennett’s value will increase slightly with Marshall gone. Bennett could be a smart buy in dynasty if you are a player or two away from a championship and you need a tight end. If your team is rebuilding, I would sell Bennett to the highest bidder and get pieces that can help you in the future.
