NFL Rumors: 49ers interested in signing WR Torrey Smith
By Evan Massey
The San Francisco 49ers are interested in signing Baltimore Ravens impending free agent wide receiver Torrey Smith in free agency.
Torrey Smith is a free agent this offseason after playing his first four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. He is one of the middle-of-the-pack wide receivers in free agency, and the San Francisco 49ers are reportedly interested in signing him.
It would reunite Smith with Anquan Boldin, and would be a reuniting of the Ravens’ two Super Bowl wide receivers that help them win the Super Bowl a few years back. San Francisco could use a bit more firepower to their offense, especially with wide receiver Michael Crabtree testing free agency this offseason as well. Smith would be a less expensive option than quite a few other receiver son the market.

During the 2014 season with the Ravens, Smith ended up catching 49 passes for 767 yards and 11 touchdowns. He is 26 years old, which makes him even more intriguing that he is in his prime.
San Francisco is entering a new era of football now that head coach Jim Harbaugh has left. Jim Tomsula will be putting in a new system, and it will be interesting to see how he uses quarterback Colin Kaepernick. There is no doubt that the 49ers have the potential to make a run at the playoffs in 2015, but they need to fill a couple of holes on the roster.
Smith might be exactly the type of deep threat wide receiver that they have been needing. Neither Crabtree or Boldin were dangerous down the field, but that is exactly where Smith excels. It would give them a completely new dynamic to their offense, and Kaepernick’s job would become even easier.
That being said, the 49ers aren’t going to be the only team that are interested in signing Smith. He is going to be a very hot commodity because he is one of the best receivers in the level underneath the high-priced receivers.
All of that being said, don’t be surprised to hear more about the 49ers showing interest in signing Smith over the next few days. Free agency will open up on Tuesday, but there will be quite a bit of news breaking between now and then.
Expect free agency to be a very busy period with quite a bit of player movement. There are quite a few bigger names on the market, but Smith is going to be a very nice pickup for whoever ends up signing him.
