Veteran cornerback Brandon Flowers looks to be getting a raise from San Diego

Brandon Flowers was an impressive addition to a San Diego Chargers’ defense ravaged by injuries in 2014. Flowers had 52 tackles and three interceptions for the Chargers as they fell just short of the playoffs.

Many people were surprised when the Kansas City Chiefs released Flowers who had just had a Pro Bowl season for the team.

The Chargers, however, happily scooped Flowers up and he has become a tremendous addition to the team’s defense.

According to Yahoo’s Rand Getlin, Flowers and the Chargers are closing in on a deal to keep the free agent cornerback in San Diego.

The Chargers also have 2014 first round pick Jason Verrett at the cornerback position to play alongside Flowers.

Verrett’s rookie season would come to a close after tears in his labrum required season-ending shoulder surgery. Flowers himself would get banged up and miss a game. However, with the Chargers in desperate need of players on the field, Flowers powered through and finished the season for San Diego.

With Peyton Manning announcing he’s returning to the Denver Broncos, the Chiefs looking to rebound and the Oakland Raiders looking to add weapons around Derek Carr, the AFC West looks to be even stronger in 2015.

It makes sense for the Chargers to get a deal done with Flowers to combat the new moves of their division rivals, and it looks like the cornerback is going to get a nice pay raise from the team as well with Getlin reporting the number to be anywhere around $8 million.

The thin cornerback market appears to be drying up before free agency can even begin with Kareem Jackson re-signing with the Texans earlier and Flowers closing in on a new deal with the Chargers.
