The Houston Texans and star cornerback Kareem Jackson have agreed to a four-year contract just ahead of Tuesday’s free agency opening day.

Kareem Jackson was one of the top free agent cornerbacks on the market, but the Houston Texans took him off the market with a four-year contract. They have been trying to work something out with Jackson for the past few days, and things finally fell into place and the two sides found a middle ground.

Jackson was a huge piece of the Texans’ defense last year, and was a very important key for Houston this offseason. He is just 26 years old, and is going to be a key figure on the Houston defense for the next four years. This was a deal that came out of nowhere, but wasn’t too terribly surprising due to the effort that the Texans were putting in to get it done.

During the 2014 season with Houston, Jackson ended up recording 57 tackles and three interceptions.

There were quite a few teams that were planning to pursue Jackson if he hit the open market, but there are plenty of other options available for those teams. Jackson had made it fairly clear earlier in the offseason that he wanted to return to the Texans and he got his wish. Houston’s defense is going to be solid next season, but they have to figure out how to make their offense match their defenses production.

Needless to say, this is a great day for both Jackson and the Texans. They both get what they were hoping for coming into the season, and Jackson took to Twitter to express his enthusiasm about the deal.

It is going to be very interesting to see what type of production the Texans get out of Jackson in 2015. Players have a tendency to work harder and play harder when they’re trying to get their first major payday, but then lose that passion after they get paid. That likely won’t be the case with Jackson, but it is still something to keep an eye on.

Houston finished last season ranked 21st against the pass and 10th against the run defensively. Next on the list will be to get some help for Jackson in the secondary.

J.J. Watt has enough help on the line and there is a good amount of talent at the linebacker position. If the Texans truly want their defense to take the next step, they could use another cornerback to work across from Jackson.

All of that being said, this was a great deal for both sides and it will likely end up being a win-win situation.
