The New York Giants have had losing records in back-to-back seasons, and that isn’t going to change until they improve their defense.

Last year brought a lot of excitement for the New York Giants, but that was mainly just because of their offense and Odell Beckham Jr.

The Giants had the 10th-most yards on offense in the league with 5,875, and yet they still finished 6-10.

While turnovers, injuries and other costly mistakes all played a huge role in another failing season, New York’s defense is what hurt them the most. Their defense gave up a total of 6,012 yards last year, and only three teams allowed offenses to have even greater success: the Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons. All four of those teams missed the playoffs and went a combined 24-40 last year – so obviously you can’t withstand a defense letting you down that much.

Now is the time to improve your weaknesses, and the Giants are hoping to get some defensive help through free agency. However, the Giants will have to spend very wisely as they have only $12.7 million in cap space right now. 21 other teams have more money to spend right now than they do.

According to reports, there are five defensive free agents that the Giants are interested in and have already contacted.

The first player they are interested in is pass rusher Jerry Hughes of the Buffalo Bills. Hughes finished last year with 9.5 sacks and three forced fumbles, and that is coming off of a year in which he already had 9.5 sacks and two forced fumbles.

Devin McCourty is on nearly everyone’s radar, and that includes the Giants. McCourty is one of the top safeties in the league, and he might just become the highest-paid safety in football once free agency is over.

It would be a massive addition to New York’s defense if they can get lucky enough to sign either McCourty or Hughes.
