The New York Jets are fearful of losing Bilal Powell to the Buffalo Bills, which has them set on targeting Shane Vereen.
It’s pretty common to see players jump to rivals nowadays in the NFL, as Brett Favre going from the Packers to the Vikings was pretty much the end of the loyalty clause in football. But before he went to Minnesota, Favre made a pitstop in New York with the Jets, who are themselves eyeing a division rival to cherry pick a replacement at running back.

With Chris Johnson released and the running back situation in total chaos, there is fear that the Jets will be losing Bilal Powell to the Buffalo Bills. Powell is said to be following Rex Ryan to the Bills, and if he leaves, then the Jets are all out of running backs.
There’s a possible solution to this problem though, and his last residence was within the AFC East in New England. According to Jets beat writer Manish Mehta, the Jets could target former New England Patriots running back Shane Vereen to replace Powell if he leaves.

It’s hard to say that Vereen will be a success in New York because he has to crucial things working against him. The first is that he’s going to be playing for the Jets, if the sign him, but the biggest thing working against future success for Vereen is Bill Belichick.
Belichick is a system coach, not unlike Tom Landry, who knows how to use a player to his advantage. But outside of the system, using the player is like a drill a nail into the wall — it just doesn’t work. That’s not to say Vereen isn’t naturally talented, but there is something about the Belichick system that makes everyone look better when they’re there but the magic tends to stay in New England.
Vereen is going to get interest elsewhere in the NFL, but the Jets targeting him is a sure-fire sign that they’re ready to overhaul the roster and start finding pieces they think will make them winners.
