Taylor Mays has a ton of NFL teams intrigued.
For the NFL teams that are looking for safety help, one of the best players on the free agent market is defensive back Taylor Mays. When you take a look at the 2015 NFL Draft and its safety class, it’s clear that there aren’t a lot of quality options. That being said, it’s no surprise that Mays has some suitors.
After the past four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, Mays is in the market to cash in on a big payday. At 27 years old, Mays is in the prime of his career and he really couldn’t have picked a better time to be entering free agency.
According to Pro Football Talk, several teams are interested in Mays. Although many teams are interested in his services, Mays has never been a starter in the NFL. Among those teams that are interested are the Oakland Raiders, the Minnesota Vikings, the St. Louis Rams, and even the Washington Redskins. Despite that interest, the Bengals plan to hold onto the USC product.
Josina Anderson of ESPN reported the Bengals and how they view Mays on if he wants to return or not.
The two teams that make a lot of sense are the Raiders and the Vikings. Oakland just released Tyvon Branch and given their young, yet talented, secondary, the Raiders are not only in position with their cap space to add a safety, they also need a veteran presence in their defensive backfield.
The Vikings, on the other hand, make a ton of sense as well. Mike Zimmer was Mays’ defensive coordinator for three seasons in Cincinnati and the Vikings could use a defensive backfield partner to pair with Harrison Smith. Both teams have cap space and although Mays hasn’t been given the chance to start, he has shown the ability to make an impact when he has been given the chance.
