Vikings, 49ers interested in Brian Hoyer
By Mike Dyce
The Minnesota Vikings and San Francisco 49ers have expressed an interest in soon to be former Cleveland Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer.
The Cleveland Browns seem to be over the Brian Hoyer era, benching him in favor of rookie Johnny Manziel late last year and signing Josh McCown this offseason.
That means Hoyer is headed to free agent waters and there are teams that have expressed an interest in Hoyer during the tampering window ahead of free agency. According to ESPN’s Josina Anderson, the Minnesota Vikings and San Francisco 49ers are both interested in Hoyer’s services.
Of course Hoyer would like a chance to compete for the starting position, and both of those teams have a No. 1 quarterback already. The 49ers aren’t giving up on Colin Kaepernick already and before a new coach gets an opportunity to work with him, this is a quarterback who led the 49ers to a Super Bowl.
Then in Minnesota they have second-year quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who impressed and showed flashes of brilliance during his rookie season. They’re molding him to be their franchise guy and giving Hoyer a chance to compete doesn’t help them accomplish that goal, they’d rather have a veteran mentor and guide him.
Hoyer always has the Houston Texans, reportedly, who probably offer him the best opportunity to start. Hoyer would likely only be a place holder in Houston until they can address the issue at some point down the line.
The New York Jets along with the Texans are still the front runners for Hoyer according to Anderson.
