The brilliant Houston Texans career of Andre Johnson is over after the Pro Bowl receiver was released.

In a move that was expected, the Houston Texans released the franchise’s all-time leading receiver Andre Johnson on Monday after they were unable to trade the perennial Pro Bowler, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

He is looking for a Super Bowl contender and a team with a talented quarterback after playing his entire career with a myriad of less-than-stellar quarterbacks with the Texans.

That would appear to make the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks logical candidates for the future Hall of Fame receiver considering neither Super Bowl participant had a 1,000-yard receiver on the team last year.

Johnson’s best years are clearly behind him and turns 34 in July, but were his declining numbers a product of playing with quarterbacks like Case Keenum, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Matt Schaub and T.J. Yates?

Johnson had 85 receptions for 935 yards and three touchdowns last year despite playing with some of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL, but his average yards per catch went down for the third year in a row and his 11 ypc was the second-lowest of his career.

He did average 110.5 receptions, 1502.5 yards and four touchdowns per season from 2012-2013 so teams interested in signing the former No. 3 pick in the 2003 NFL Draft will be hoping to get that player and not the possession receiver we saw last year in Houston.

Always one of the more physical receivers in the league, Johnson hasn’t been a burner in recent years, but his savvy, size and desire to compete for a Super Bowl should result in a motivated player who empties his tank for the next year or two for that elusive ring.

Where do you think Johnson would be the best fit and should sign as a free agent? Maybe he sticks in the AFC South and signs with the Indianapolis Colts and replaces Reggie Wayne and is on the receiving end of passes from Andrew Luck?
