The Pittsburgh Steelers re-sign tight end Matt Spaeth to a 2-year deal

After announcing that they were not going to resign veteran defensive linemen, Brett Keisel, the Pittsburgh Steelers announced that they were going to retain veteran tight end, Matt Spaeth. Spaeth has spent six seasons of his 8 year career with the Steelers.

“I think of Pittsburgh as a home now,” Spaeth told Mike Prisuta. “This organization is the best in the world, and I am just happy to be back.”

In his eight seasons in the NFL Spaeth has totaled 410 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. He is mainly a blocking tight end as the Steelers spend most of their time passing to their other tight end, Heath Miller. Spaeth helped block for 1,752 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns in 2014.

The Steelers won the AFC North last year going 11-5. They were eliminated from the playoffs last year by divisional rival, the Baltimore Ravens. In order to build on this success, Spaeth will be key in the running game. His physicality is something coaches can’t really teach at the NFL level, so he will be extremely valuable to the Pittsburgh. Especially because Le’Veon Bell could serve a suspension at the beginning of the year and the Steelers will have to start the season with a backup running back.

“We had a very successful 2014,” Spaeth went on to say. “But now it’s on each and every one of us to get ready and try to take it to the next level.”

Spaeth has played in 110 career games. His veteran presence should be huge this year for the Steelers. Even more so than in years past because they did not re-sign 37-year old defensive linemen Brett Keisel. Established leadership within an organization is one thing you can’t buy in free agency. As a man who knows the system and won with the team before, Spaeth will fill that role beautifully.
