NFL Free Agency is nearly in full swing, but some players are showing that loyalty still exists in the era of big money contracts.
The Miami Dolphins stole Ndamukong Suh away from the Detroit Lions this past weekend by offering him a massive $114 million contract. That’s big time money right there and it was just slightly more than what the Lions were offering their now former All-Pro defensive tackle.
Suh signing with the Dolphins was a clear case of money over loyalty, but it’s not a quality that all players share in the NFL. Just before the Dolphins agreed on their deal with Suh, they were burned by a player who chose to reject a big money contract to take one with the team he was already playing for.
According to Dave Hyde of the Sun Sentinel, the Miami Dolphins offered Randall Cobb more than what he re-signed with the Green Bay Packers for.
In fact, Hyde notes that the Dolphins offer was ‘significantly more’ than the $40 million contract that Randall Cobb inked in Green Bay, but it wasn’t good enough to pry him away from a winner.
That’s really what this all comes down to, as Cobras going to take big money to play for a Dolphins team that is in no way a guaranteed winner. Playing for the Packers is an honor to many, and the tightly knit fanbase of true fans — not phony bandwagoners — clearly leave an impact on the players they cheer on.
Randall Cobb didn’t want to leave Green Bay, and even though there was more money on the table in Miami — and no state tax either — he decided he wanted to stay. That’s a sign of loyalty over money that seems to be rare these days in an NFL universe controlled by the top dollar and the fattest contract.
