Steelers GM releases statement on Polamalu, despite the fact that they have nothing to say

The saga between safety Troy Polamalu and the Pittsburgh Steelers is ongoing. Stories have been leaked that the Steelers want Polamalu to retire so they don’t have to cut the franchise icon. Polamalu wants to keep playing, or maybe he doesn’t know what he wants to do. There have been a lot of rumors, but not much in the way of concrete information.

It’s all made the Steelers want to come out and address the matter. The problem is, they have nothing to say.

There have been no developments with the Polamalu situation, but that didn’t stop the Steelers from releasing a statement on it anyway.

“At this time, we do not have an update on Troy Polamalu or his contract status,” Steelers General Manager Kevin Colbert said in the statement. “We will continue to communicate with Troy and his representatives regarding his future.”

Two sentences, zero information. Great. Thanks for the update.

Seriously, who wrote that release, Perd Hapley? Were the Steelers so desperate to say something that they just had to release a statement regardless of their lack of anything to say? Was this the result of some kind of “see how few words you can fit into this statement” bet in the Steelers PR office?

It’s obvious that something is going on between the Steelers and Polamalu, given that they felt the need to update the public that nothing was going on. Polamalu is one of the all-time great Steelers (a more impressive list than most teams have), but he has really started to slip the last few years. The Steelers may decide that they are better off next year without the 34-year-old safety, and want him to retire so they don’t have to cut him.

Like most NFL players, Polamalu, an eight-time Pro Bowler and the 2010 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, probably wants to play until he can’t anymore; it’s really up to him, how much he feels he has left in his tank, and whether he wants to play for a team that’s not Pittsburgh.

It would be very strange to see Polamalu in any other uniform, but it seems like that’s what may happen if he decides to come back.
