Los Angeles Angels own Jake Locker’s MLB draft rights
By Josh Hill
Jake Locker may have retired from the NFL today, but he may have a future in the MLB thanks to the Los Angeles Angels.
NFL quarterbacks have good arms — which is an understatement but it’s something that puts them on the radar of scouts in another sport that values solid arms. MLB scouts routinely scout NFL quarterbacks who have a baseball background and that means some NFL players could have a career in a different sport.
Jake Locker is one of those players, as his days in the NFL are over but his future in baseball is at the very least existent.
As pointed out by Jon Heyman from CBSSports, the Los Angeles Angels hold the draft rights to recently retired Jake Locker. Despite that, the team is not expected to pursue a contract with him to bring him to their minor league system.
It’s pretty common for NFL quarterbacks to have their draft rights owned by MLB clubs, as most played baseball in their college days. Russell Wilson is still technically a member of the Texas Rangers while he can fully expect Jameis Winston to have an MLB club draft him as well.
Players like Deion Sanders and Bo Jackson have played in both the NFL and MLB at the same time with Sanders doing so up through the 2001 season.
But Locker seems to be done with professional sports, and even though the Angels could give him a second chance in a new sport, his playing days are over.
