According to one report, theĀ Chicago Bears have agreed to a deal to bring in free agent wide receiver Eddie Royal.Ā

Eddie Royal loved playing with quarterback Jay Cutler when the two were teammates with the Denver Broncos. They’ll get another chance to be teammates, this time in Chicago.

At least according to one source, they will.

But there are other reports stating that it is not a done deal, and that Royal could still be returning to San Diego. Of course, that comes from a UT-San Diego writer, Michael Gelkhen.

Of course the biggest news in all of this might be that there is a player in the NFL who ā€œlikesā€ Jay Cutler, but it’s not the point to be made here (and of course Royal just spent three seasons in San Diego with Philip Rivers, who at least on the field comes across in a similar manner of Cutler).

The point, however, is that Royal may be joining his third NFL team, or he may not. We cannot be certain. Reports indicate either is possible.

What we do know is that wherever Royal ends up in 2015, that team will be getting a quality slot receiver (primarily). In 98 career games, Royal has caught 338 passes for 3,750 yards and and 25 touchdowns.

The catch total combined with yardage equals out to an 11.1 average per catch. But he’s been better in that department in San Diego, averaging 12.4 over his three seasons. That was under Rivers, who likes to throw the ball deep more often than Cutler.

Cutler tends to be a guy who throws quickly and short. That is primarily what he did in his most successful moments with Marc Trestman, and will likely be the recipe for his success under new coordinator Adam Gase, who led Peyton Manning’s short pass-heavy offense in Denver the past two years.
