The NFL is poised to investigate deals announced during the three day tampering window. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the league sent memos to certain teams on Tuesday, advising them to hold on to their phone records as they intend to investigate deals made during that time.

The league premiered the “tampering window” in 2013, which disallowed teams from entering into any agreements with pending unrestricted free agents. The result was a boring rumor mill until the 4PM start of the league’s new year, wherein the aforementioned Adam Schefter turned his Twitter feed into one giant news dump.

Not so this year.

Big deals have been rolling in and are being reported as soon as they do so, well before the 4PM deadline on Tuesday. The biggest of which was the Dolphins “agreeing” with Ndamukong Suh on Sunday. The Dolphins, by the way, are nervous that that particular deal could be exactly the thing to trigger an investigation by the league, according to a story by SBN.

Miami isn’t the only team that might be nervous, the Eagles jaw-dropping contract with Byron Maxwell also became public during this period as well. Not to mention the LeSean McCoy trade to the Bills.

However, the interesting subject to consider here, is why this year has been so wildly different from the first year of the window.  Could it possibly be that teams have no fear of reprisals from Roger Goodell and the NFL? Before the 4PM deadline on Tuesday, at least 12 of the top 18 free agents had already agreed to deals with new teams.

That’s what you call a distinct lack of institutional control. It’s widespread too. It wasn’t just the Dolphins and the Eagles.
