The Jets are expected to release Percy Harvin today before the 4PM deadline on Tuesday, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. The move means that the Seahawks will only get a sixth round draft pick out of the 2014 trade that sent Harvin to New York. Seattle would have gotten a fourth round pick if Harvin remained on the roster after the start of free agency.

For the Jets, it means relatively nothing. They won’t have any dead money on their cap as none of Harvin’s remaining $41.5 million contract was guaranteed.

The Jets have a ridiculous amount of cap space, bumped up to about $45 million after the removal of Harvin’s salary for the year. The team is ready to spend too. They’re already working to sign Seahawks guard James Carpenter and it’s rumored they’re very in the mix to re-acquire cornerback Darrelle Revis. Carpenter is an instant upgrade at the guard position for the Jets, who had a lot of bad play there last season.

However, Carpenter has been plagued with injuries during his time in Seattle and has also been call out of shape to begin the season. There’s no doubt the Seahawks were ready to move on from him, despite his fairly decent play last year.

In terms of Revis, that’s definitely something that would help the Jets right away. Bad corner play was another major failing of last year’s Jets. Defensive-minded coach Todd Bowles would benefit from Revis’ shutdown play, enabling him to do more of what he wants across the rest of the defense.

On the other side, Harvin will definitely have suitors, but it’s unlikely he’ll get a lucrative contract with plenty of receivers available and a deep draft. Fortunately, a lot of teams have needs at the receiver position so you can expect several teams to be inquiring. The Packers, Patriots and Eagles have all shown interest in Harvin’s skillset. Harvin has previously said that he wanted to go to a team with a solid quarterback position, i.e. not one in flux like the Jets have been. That would seem to put the Packers and the Patriots at the top of the heap.
