Real Madrid 3-4 Schalke 04: Watch all the goals

Schalke won the game, but Real Madrid advance to the next round.

The noise in the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium was deafening from the beginning of the game, the fans served up a cauldron of chants and boos to add to today’s atmosphere.

Schalke came in to this game needing a miracle. Only twice has a team lost the first leg and gone on to qualify, and it has never been done by a team trailing by two.

Credit to Roberto DiMatteo’s men, they came out fighting and tried to put the Real defense under pressure, causing the Spanish team to give possession away pretty easily.

Real’s shaky form has clearly had an effect on their confidence both up front and in defense. In the opening 15 minutes of the game they allowed the German team to have a few chances due to some poor defending. In addition to their shocking defending they were hesitant in their attacking play and Gareth Bale really seemed to be struggling.

It took the German side scoring to get Madrid out of second gear. Fuchs gave Schalke an astonishing 1-0 lead with a mix of some nice build up play and poor defending.

It only took Madrid five minutes to equalize against the run of play when Ronaldo smashed home a header from a well whipped in corner.

Schalke didn’t let that deter them as they continued to push forward earning a few more chances. Klaas Jan Huntelaar rattled the crossbar with a superb volley from distance. That seemed to only encourage the Dutch striker as he got on the end of a rebound to put Schalke 2-1 up. The footballing world looked on in shock as the Germans celebrated their second surprise goal of the night.

The half seemed to be edging out at 2-1 before Ronaldo once again pulled the favorites out of the fire with yet another header. Coentrau did well to cross the ball first time and Ronaldo was flying through the air to guide it home. It was a very exciting first half that finished 2-2.

The second half picked up where the first left off, Schalke pushing forward and Real Madrid struggling. You could hear the groans of the Spanish fans with every misplaced pass the favorites put in. However the difference in quality between the two teams began to show as Real Madrid looked more likely to score on the counter attack despite being anywhere but the races.

It took until the 53rd minute for the home team to take the lead and it came through some calm footwork from French striker Karim Benzema.

The home lead lasted an incredible four minutes before Schalke fired back with arguably the goal of the game. Leroy Sane took advantage of the fact the Real Madrid defense didn’t close him down and he curled one in to the left corner of the goal from the edge of the box. A superb strike from the young man.

The next few stages of the game consisted of attack after attack from Madrid following the goal, they seemed to take control of the game. Ronaldo continued his impressive performance while his colleague Gareth Bale continued to have a bad day at the office.

Schalke continued to push forward and a mix up in defense allowed Klaas Jan Huntelaar in to rocket the ball past the Madrid keeper and in off the crossbar. The Dutch striker who was having an incredible game was left with a lot to do but he gave Casillias with no chance.

Though Schalke failed to qualify for the quarter finals they should be incredibly proud of their performance. They weren’t given any hope going in to the game and they refused to lay down, time and time again they challenged the European Champions and it was an incredible game. Real Madrid really have to take a look at themselves if they are to learn and progress from this shaky performance. Those rumors of a crisis in Madrid won’t be going away after tonight’s poor display. It was the first time they conceded 4 goals at home in fifteen years.
