The purge is on in Tampa Bay as the team appears to be set to release safety Dashon Goldson

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are making a flurry of additions and subtractions. The team has released tackle Anthony Collins and defensive end Michael Johnson. The team also signed Dallas Cowboys linebacker Bruce Carter as they continue to overhaul the roster in the second year of the Jason Licht and Lovie Smith regime.

Now it appears there may be another release on the way.

According to Rick Stroud, Buccaneers beat writer for the Tampa Bay Times, the team is set to release safety Dashon Goldson once the team signs safety Chris Conte.

The Buccaneers signed Goldson in 2013, after Goldson was an All-Pro in 2012 and went to the Super Bowl with San Francisco 49ers.

Goldson’s career in Tampa Bay didn’t go the way many expected it would after his stellar performances in San Francisco.

He became even more out of place in 2014, when the team hired Lovie Smith as the head coach. In the Tampa 2 defense, Goldson recorded just 81 tackles with no interceptions or sacks.

The Buccaneers who are in just their second year of the regime are showing they aren’t afraid to release players that haven’t panned out.

The Buccaneers also hold the No. 1 pick in the draft where the team could potentially draft Jameis Winston to be the face of the franchise. Last year’s quarterback Josh McCown is now in Cleveland and the future of Mike Glennon is unknown.

The Buccaneers also traded away safety Mark Barron mid-season last year.

Goldson appears to be the next player on the way out. The safety market is thin in both free agency and the draft. If Goldson is indeed released, the safety could have a bit of a market if teams are looking for hard-hitting physical safety.
