John Daly calls PGA Tour drug testing a joke
PGA Tour player John Daly said Tuesday that the PGA Tour drug testing is not random and a ‘big joke.’
On John Daly’s SiriusXM radio show, “Hit It Hard with John Daly,” loud-mouthed, controversial PGA Tour player John Daly called the PGA Tour’s drug testing “a big joke” Tuesday after he was selected to take another drug test.

Daly basically called out the tour, saying there’s no way their drug testing is random. And his show is on the PGA Tour SiriusXM radio station…
“This’ll be the fifth or sixth year in a row I’m going to get drug tested [at this week’s Valspar Championship],” Daly said. “It’s not random; it’s a big joke. This whole drug testing is a joke.”
The tour has always dealt with criticisms of their all-too quiet drug testing for it’s lack of public knowledge and apparent struggles to effectively test for human growth hormone drugs.
According to the Golf Channel, the tour picks off players “randomly” to take drug tests after they’ve finished a round. Last Thursday at Doral, Phil Mickelson was pulled after an opening 74, while J.B. Holmes, who opened with an all-world 62, was not selected to take a drug test.
2010 court records showed that the five-time tournament winner was suspended five times and had been fined nearly $100,000 by the tour for multiple incidents that have brought the tour bad publicity.
After John Daly’s pro-am round at the Valspar Championship, Daly re-stated his frustrations.
“I don’t mind taking a drug test at all, but when I’m out here on Thursday and Friday thinking I’m going to get drug tested holding my piss for two hours it affects your golf game,” he said.
A non-random system can give players who may be cheating with drugs, the chance to hack the system, per say, and work around the testing according to Daly.
“It’s not fair when a guy who might be doing something wrong that knows he has five or six weeks to do what he wants,” Daly said. “In the NFL, they know when they are getting drug tested, we don’t. If it’s random, then make it random.”
Daly said he has been tested at the Valspar Championship five consecutive years and that he gets tested an average of six to nine times a year. He expects to get tested at the Valspar this week and also the Canadian Open and the Reno-Tahoe Open later this season because he’s been consistently tested at those tournaments.
We’ll see if anything changes in the PGA Tour’s policies after these statements of frustration from Daly that he says are shared by other players.
