The Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to a deal with Ryan Mathews that makes him the latest injured skill player that Chip Kelly wants to take a chance on.
Ryan Mathews was supposed to be the big running back success to follow LaDanian Tomlinson but that never really panned out. After numerous injuries throughout his short career, Mathews is off to Philadelphia to replace LeSean McCoy and he becomes the latest charity case for Chip Kelly’s Eagles.
Mathews is a fine running back — when healthy. The problem is he’s never healthy enough to play 16 games in a season, let alone be health for the postseason. The Chargers have moved on from him and it appears that the Eagles are willing to take a chance on him with a deal that could be construed as an overpayment.
According to Adam Schefter from ESPN, the Eagles have given Mathews a three-year, $11.5 million with a whopping $5 million guaranteed.
That’s not a massive contract but it’s one that Mathews hasn’t really earned in his career. He’s been injured far too often to get that contract from the Eagles, and it sort of flies in the face of the buying low strategy that the Eagles are touting for the moves that they’ve made.
