The San Francisco 49ers are looking to bring back the screen pass to their offense. This can be proven by the fact that the team will be hosting RB Reggie Bush for a visit Wednesday, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
As of right now, Reggie Bush is leading all active running backs in career receptions, with 466. He has also managed to record seven 40-catch seasons throughout his nine-year career in the NFL. He had a limited season last year with the Detroit Lions due to ankle and back injuries, playing in a total of 11 games, recording 40 catches for 253 yards and 76 carries for 297 yards. He only rushed for 3.9 yards per carry.
However, from 2011-2013, Bush had excellent seasons. He averaged 1,026 rushing yards and 44 receptions per season in that time span. In 2013, Bush rushed for a total of 1,006 yards, recorded 4.5 yards per carry and finished the season eighth in the NFL for yards from the scrimmage. He totaled 1,512 yards.
The 49ers are currently looking for a running back to help replace their career rushing leader, Frank Gore. Gore hasn’t missed a game since 2010 and has been the 49ers No. 1 running back for a long time. However, he just signed a deal with the Indianapolis Colts on Tuesday. Currently, the 49ers have Carlos Hyde listed as their starter and Kendall Hunter listed as their backup. That could change, though, if they were to get Bush.
Reggie Bush would bring a lot to the 49ers. Adding a threat with screen passes will open up the 49ers offense and give them plenty of options. Bush is an excellent runner and receiver, causing defenses to have to focus on him a lot. In return, that will take the focus off other aspects of the team’s offense.
In addition, Bush has also proved that he can be valuable in the return game. He has returned 98 punts in his nine years with the NFL. However, he hasn’t returned one since 2011. Back in 2008, he returned three punts for a touchdown, which put him tied for 5th place in most punt return touchdowns in a single season.
The 49ers have a chance to add a solid running back to their offense. Bush could be the player they’ve been needing to get that championship ring.
