Former 49ers cornerback Perrish Cox is visiting the Washington Redskins

The Washington Redskins had issues with the secondary in 2014. The Redskins ranked No. 24 in passing yards allowed last season, and with free agency underway, the team is looking to upgrade their secondary.

Washington is looking to upgrade the secondary after Ryan Clark retired and the team released Brandon Merriweather.

The team has been linked to San Diego Chargers free agent strong safety Marcus Gilchrist, and now, they’re being linked to another name that could potentially help strengthen their secondary.

According to Ian Rapoport, the Redskins will have Perrish Cox in for a visit tomorrow.

Cox was a bright spot in a down year for San Francisco. He had five interceptions in 2014 as a member of a 49ers secondary that allowed the fifth-fewest passing yards in the NFL.

Cox would be a big upgrade to a struggling Redskins secondary. With a thin market for defensive backs after the likes of Devin McCourty and Darrelle Revis having already signed, Cox could be a significant addition to the Redskins if they sign him.

The Redskins are coming off a 4-12 season and are targeting an area of weakness in the early stages of free agency. With the market drying up, however, the Redskins will have to act quick if they want to upgrade their secondary. They could also turn to the draft in April, if they decide they don’t like what the market has to offer.

The good news is that the Redskins finally have a first round pick this season after not having one the previous two seasons after trading for Robert Griffin III with the St. Louis Rams.

One thing is for sure, the Redskins know they have to fix the secondary and they appear to be diligent in their efforts to do so.
