New Orleans Saints are trying to move receiver Kenny Stills, according to reports

It was just two years ago that the New Orleans Saints drafted wide receiver Kenny Stills. Now, it appears that they’re already prepared to move on from him.

Reports came out today that the team is shopping Stills, including this tweet from NBC’s Donna Marie Russini:

The Saints have been strongly linked to several big-name free agents, including CJ Spiller, Brandon Browner, and Tramon Williams. For a team that’s already over the salary cap, the question of how they would afford those free agents is a valid one. Trading Stills may be one solution.

Stills was a fifth-round pick in 2013 out of Oklahoma. He immediately made an impact as a rookie as just one of Drew Brees’ diverse group of offensive weapons. He’s coming off a 2014 season in which he caught 63 passes for 931 yards and three touchdowns.

But on a team that’s in cap trouble, trading from a position of strength may be the best way to remain relevant and yet get under the cap. The Saints have Marques Colston, Brandin Cooks, and Robert Meachem, among others. However, with Jimmy Graham gone, the Saints will have traded their top two pass catchers from last year if they move Stills as well.

Stills is on a rookie contract and is still just 22, so he should at least be able to fetch a mid-round draft pick in a trade. Then again, the latest trend seems to be player-for-player trades. Maybe Chip Kelly will trade Mark Sanchez for him or something. There’s no telling what Chip Kelly will do.

However, it looks like Stills isn’t the only New Orleans player on the block:

So there’s that.

The Saints are coming off an extremely disappointing 6-10 season, and their salary cap situation is a complete mess, so maybe we shouldn’t be surprised that they’re looking to retool It is interesting that Cooks is safe while Stills is on the block, though. They must see something in last year’s first-rounder that they just don’t see in Stills.
