NFL Free Agency: 5 Best moves so far
Green Bay Packers re-sign Randall Cobb (four years, $40 million)
This deal happened before free agency officially opened, but it was as important as any made this week. It looked like Cobb was set to make a ton of money on the open market and that the Packers wouldn’t be able to match whatever money a team like the Oakland Raiders or San Francisco 49ers threw at him. From what I’ve been told, the market for Cobb didn’t develop the way it was expected to, and he quickly took the offer on the table from Green Bay.
This is a great deal for both sides, since Cobb gets $17 million in guaranteed money and the Packers lock up a play-making wideout they wouldn’t have found on the open market. The 24-year-old Cobb could also test free agency again in four years when he is likely to still be in his prime.
In reality, both Cobb and the Packers needed this deal as Cobb has become an invaluable piece of Green Bay’s attack. The 2014 Pro Bowler caught 91 passes in 2014, for 1,287 yards and 12 touchdowns this season. He’s is an outstanding complement to fellow wideout Jordy Nelson, and with 2014 draftee Davante Adams on the roster, Cobb can slide into the slot as often as the Packers want, since that’s where he’s best at making plays.
Cobb wasn’t going to find a better quarterback to throw him the ball than Aaron Rodgers, and he is an absolute perfect fit for Green Bay’s offense. With the re-signing of Bryan Bulaga, the Packers now have every major piece of their offense signed through 2016.
