The New England Patriots may have found their replacement for the departed Shane Vereen in veteran running back Reggie Bush.

Reggie Bush is visiting the New England Patriots on Friday, according to Field Yates and could be the perfect fit in the offense to replace the departed Shane Vereen who signed with the New York Giants at the beginning of free agency.

Bush, 30, was released by the Detroit Lions before the start of free agency after two seasons with the team and an injury-plagued and disappointing 2014 season. Bush was limited to 11 games last year and 297 yards and two rushing scores and 40 receptions for 253 yards.

The rushing total and his 550 yards from scrimmage are his lowest since he was limited to eight games in 2010 with the New Orleans Saints and his 3.9 yards per carry average was the lowest since 2008.

The previous three years, however, Bush was an effective runner with two, 1,000-yard seasons and averaged 1,390 yards from scrimmage from 2011-2013.

A one-year, incentive-laden deal with an option for a second year could be enough to get Bush to sign with the Patriots as he looks to regain the form he displayed the previous three years with the Lions and Miami Dolphins.

Bush would be able to do a lot of the same things Vereen did so well with the Patriots and be a quality receiver out of the backfield who doesn’t need to carry the ball much with LeGarrette Blount, Jonas Gray, James White and Branden Bolden currently on the roster.

It would not be surprising in the least to see Bush thrive in that role and have a productive season for the Super Bowl champions.

A potential signing of Bush could mean the end of Stevan Ridley’s time in New England who is a free agent and could be squeezed out.
