Golden State Warriors’ center Marreese Speights has been suspended for the game on Friday night vs the Nuggets. According to a story by CSN Bay Area, Speights was suspended for one game without pay for pleading no contest to a reckless driving charge picked up in Florida.
The incident happened in August when Speights was arrested in Tampa and charged with suspicion of DUI. He allegedly failed to yield the right of way when he pulled out of a driveway in a black Bentley. Officers on the scene detected “indications of impairment” and performed a field sobriety test. Breath samples showed a blood-alcohol content of .103 and .106, when the legal limit in Florida is .o8.
Speights was taken to jail, but was released on bond the next morning. The charges were eventually reduced to misdemeanor reckless driving, which he pleaded no-contest to. Speights paid $903 in fines as well as court costs. The no-contest plea was reported on March 3rd, but the suspension from the NBA came down today.
Speights is the Warriors’ reserve center and he’s having a career year with an average of 11 points per game. He also has 4.5 rebounds on average and is playing roughly 16.7 minutes per game. He has been shooting 49.7 percent from the floor and 82.8 percent from the line. Speights is one of the Warriors’ key reserves in their strong bench play this year. However, his time has been down in March, at just under 10 minutes per game, from around 20 in January.
The Warriors are set to face the Nuggets Friday night, and will still be heavily favored, despite the Speights suspension. Golden State is on a five game winning streak, while the Nuggets have won two straight, last beating the Hawks on Wednesday.
According to Blue Man Hoop, the key matchups will be between Steph Curry and Denver’s Ty Lawson as well as Draymond Green vs Kenneth Faried. It’s possible David Lee will see more time in Speights’ place.
