Brandon Marshall praises Jets QB Geno Smith

Incoming New York Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall has nothing but good things to say about incumbent quarterback Geno Smith.

New Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall already has one thing going for him in joining a new team. He already has a relationship with the quarterback. According to a story by NFL.com, Marshall has known Geno Smith for a few years.

“This is pretty interesting because Geno and I, we started this weird relationship from the time he got drafted,” Marshall said. “He’s a Florida guy. My gym … it’s literally like three exits from him. We started this relationship, and it’s pretty cool to see how it develops off the field.”

Marshall also said that Smith has a passion and drive for the game that other people don’t see. He and Smith intend to get together even more in the offseason, to help develop the on-field rapport, as well as get other Jets players involved. Marshall mentioned the fact that he does realize it will likely be a competition between Smith and newly acquired quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.

The big caveat for all of the Jets’ offseason moves is that they still don’t have a proven quarterback, regardless of who wins the competition. Smith has more talent, but has a hard time being consistent. Fitzpatrick knows Chan Gailey’s offense, but the talent is a question.

It’s possible working with Marshall, a real number one receiver, in the offseason will help Smith leap over his competition and get the starting job. However, if he continues to deliver rocky starts when the NFL season begins, then nothing the Jets do will keep them out of the AFC East basement.

After all, the AFC East has continued to improve around the Jets. The Patriots will likely be as tough as ever, Buffalo has a new coach, LeSean McCoy and Percy Harvin, while Miami has picked up perhaps the best defensive tackle in the league in Ndamukung Suh.

In other news, nothing ever gets easier in the NFL.
