When you’ve made more money playing golf than the average person will see over the course of their entire lifetime, and are universally considered among the best to ever play the great game, frustrating things happen less often to you on a golf course.
But even the best have moments that would irritate even the casual Saturday morning golf club swinger who cannot hit the ball to save himself. The legendary Ernie Els had such a moment on Friday at the Valspar Championship at Copperhead in Palm Harbor, FL.
Els needed a birdie on that hole just to keep himself on the cut line. So he had to be aggressive, and he was. He even hit a fairly nice shot, but because of the aggressive swing, he had a violent follow through, and the result was his club had a collision with the adjoining tree, and the tree won.
Els did not get his birdie. In fact, he ended up recording a double-bogey, likely reeling mentally from the entire situation, of breaking his club and the requirements it put on him.
As a result, he finished +4 and missed the cut by three strokes–the cut line ended up +1.
