Wide Receiver, Stevie Johnson, is meeting with the Super Bowl Champion, New England Patriots on Monday according to a tweet from Ian Rapoport.
The New England Patriots, whose roster has been in flux this off season, are reportedly interested in wide receiver, Stevie Johnson. He apparently met with the Chargers yesterday and is on his way to Foxborough on Monday.
If a deal is reached with the Patriots, this would be Johnson’s third team in last three years.
Former #49ers WR Stevie Johnson, who visited the #Chargers yesterday, will head to New England on Monday to visit the #Patriots.

Johnson is coming off a disappointing season for the San Francisco 49ers, totaling just 35 receptions for 435 yards and 3 touchdowns. He spent his first seven years in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills where he emerged as one of the best wide receivers in the NFL in 2010. Since then, his production has been at a slow, but steady decline forcing him to switch teams before last season.

However, the 28 year old veteran can still contribute if put in the right situation. While his numbers weren’t as good as he has been in years past, he was also targeted much less (35 times) in San Francisco than he was in Buffalo (averaged 131.5 targets in last four years with Buffalo). Plus, he had to deal with a struggling young quarterback in Colin Kaepernick last year with the 49ers.
If he would go to New England, he would team up with a top tier quarterback in Tom Brady. Wide receivers have had a history of reinventing their careers with Brady. After Randy Moss had two horribly disappointing seasons with the Oakland Raiders from 2005-2006, he was shipped off to New England the year after. Moss, who was still in his prime, came to the Patriots and in his first season led the league in touchdown receptions with 23 a career best. Brady is known to be one of the best in NFL history at getting the most out of his receivers and that is obvious if you look at Randy Moss’ career.
Much like Moss in 2007, Johnson has an opportunity that most wide receivers in the NFL don’t get. Playing with one of the best quarterbacks in the history of the game doesn’t really come around more than once. It’s obvious that Johnson still has a lot left in the tank, so this seems to make the most sense for him. And the Patriots are going to need some help after Darrelle Revis left the team to rejoin the Jets earlier this week. This seems like a win for all involved. But we will have to wait and find out after Monday’s meeting between the two parties.
