Key Additions

  • OF/1B Adam Lind
  • RP Neal Cotts

And the award for the most boring offseason in the world goes to…the Milwaukee Brewers. The sad commentary here is that boring equals business as usual in Milwaukee.

When slugger Prince Fielder left town after their NL Central winning year of 2011, the team has felt a significant void in the power department. Braun’s performance enhancing issues haven’t helped matters.

Ron Roenicke is praying that Adam Lind can be the guy to bat cleanup all season long and protect Braun.

The lone semi-big move made this offseason came in November when pitcher Marco Estrada was sent to Toronto for Lind. Lind is coming off a disappointing 2014 campaign which saw him only play in 96 games, hitting only six home runs and 40 runs batted in.

When he’s not injured though, Lind can mash the ball. In 2013 for example, he smashed 23 home runs for the Blue Jays while hitting a more than adequate .288. It was the fourth time in his nine year career he crossed the 20 home run threshold.

    •  RHP Yovani Gallardo

Once the pride and joy of the Brewers farm, Yovani Gallardo is now in Texas. Melvin traded Gallardo along with cash for infielder Luis Sardinas a couple of mid-level pitching talents.

From 2009 to 2012, Gallardo arrived in the big leagues as a bonafide starter. Each of those seasons saw him put up a K per 9 rate of 9+. His ERA was routinely in the mid to low 3.00’s and made the All-Star team in 2010.

Something happened starting in 2013 – he simply fell off a cliff.

His strikeout rate dipped to 7.2 and 6.8 respectively the past two seasons and in 2013 sported an ERA north of four.

This past January Melvin finally made the move to add some depth to the organization in exchange for Gallardo.
