The New York Mets suffered another blow after starter Zack Wheeler was diagnosed with a torn UCL. Wheeler is the second member of the Mets this spring to suffer the career-altering injury.

The New York Mets have had terrible luck this spring that has dated back to last season. Last season the team lost young phenom Matt Harvey to a torn UCL. This spring they lost reliever Josh Edgin to a torn UCL, and today the team received even more bad news as they found out that they were going to lose their other young franchise pitcher.

After undergoing an MRI, the Mets learned that pitcher Zack Wheeler has a torn UCL.

This is a big blow to the Mets as the young pitcher will need Tommy John surgery.

The Mets are poised to get Matt Harvey back after he had the surgery, and now just as he is coming back the team loses another couple of arms.

The Mets look at Harvey and Wheeler as their two big horses to take the mound and lead the team back to the postseason.

Now, it appears that team might have to do without both in their run until they get Harvey back at some point.

Losing Wheeler is a huge loss for the Mets as he led the team in strikeouts and innings pitched over the last two seasons.

Last season, Wheeler posted a 11-11 record with a 3.54 era in 32 starts for New York. This wasn’t the first MRI that Wheeler had either as he underwent two previous MRI’s earlier in the off-season.

Neither of those MRI’s revealed any ligament or structural damage. This time the results didn’t produce as much luck for Wheeler or the Mets.

The Mets have a lot of young talent that are expected to take the organization back to competing for championships. For that to happen, they need their young talent to remain healthy.
