The New York Jets are reportedly receiving trade offers for third-year cornerback Dee Milliner.

It took less than a week for the New York Jets to transform their secondary from an organizational weakness to one of its prominent strengths. As a result, the team suddenly has a surplus of coveted cornerbacks, which has some NFL teams inquiring about one of their cheapest and most expendable.

Manish Mehta at the New York Daily News reports that the Jets have received offers for former first-round pick Dee Milliner, but the team remains uninterested — for now.

Mehta writes, “Although the Jets aren’t actively shopping Milliner, it’s fair to wonder whether [GM Mike] Maccagnan would part ways with a player betrayed by his body at such a young age if the price is right. For now, the Jets are content waiting for the third-year player to get healthy to properly evaluate him as he competes for the No. 4 cornerback spot. A trade down the road, however, has not been ruled out, according to sources.”

The Jets spent big in free agency, bringing back cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie along with CB Buster Skrine in deals that guaranteed a total of $60 million. It’s only natural that fellow GMs would sniff around for scraps, but with Dee Milliner still playing under the rookie wage scale, it makes more sense for the Jets to be patient and give Milliner a chance to get healthy and prove himself.

While Milliner hadn’t been a world beater in his first two seasons, injuries were a far bigger concern than anything seen on the field. Milliner started his rookie season with injuries, which persisted throughout his first campaign. His second season was even worse, ending with a torn Achilles. In all, Milliner has missed 16 games in his first two NFL seasons.

But that’s hardly a deterrent for the Jets, for now anyways. The only offers they’ve reportedly received have been for mid-to-low round draft picks, which the team has no interest in trading Milliner for.

You can hardly blame GM Maccagnan for balking at such a deal. As he noted at the Combine, “I will say this with cornerbacks: you can never have enough good ones.”

The Jets have a chance to make their secondary a strength with solid depth to back it up. Trading a piece of that away for a low pick would hardly be a wise way to start what’s otherwise been a promising 2015 offseason.
