The Green Bay Packers are reportedly still looking to sign another wide receiver, and veteran Wes Welker could end up being signed by them.

Aaron Rodgers already has one of the most dangerous offenses in the NFL surrounding him, but the Green Bay Packers are looking to give him even more weapons. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, the Packers are interested in signing another wide receiver in free agency. Wes Welker was mentioned as one player to keep an eye on.

Welker’s name wasn’t expected to come up in connection with the Packers, especially after Green Bay was able to re-sign star wide receiver Randall Cobb earlier this offseason. Green Bay will now have a big three wide receiving corps of Cobb, Jordy Nelson, and Davante Adams. Despite being 33 years old, Welker would still fit very nicely as a fourth receiver.

Last season with the Denver Broncos, Welker ended up catching just 49 passes for 464 yards and two touchdowns.

Those numbers are down from what has come to be expected from Welker. His age is a major concern moving forward, and his concussion problems are also a concern. Despite both of those issues, the Packers would be wise to give him a chance on a cheap deal if he’s willing to accept a smaller deal with less playing time than he has grown accustomed to.

Green Bay could use another receiver like Welker who can make plays over the middle and in the short game. He would fit perfectly with Rodgers in the short slant offense that they like to run, and would be a very dangerous fourth wide receiver for any defense to cover. Ted Thompson hasn’t been known to bring in bigger names, but this one would make a lot of sense.

Even if Welker isn’t able to give them any major production, it would still be worth trying. If he stayed healthy and accepted his role, there is a good chance that he would excel with Rodgers and the Packers’ offense.

Don’t be surprised to see the Packers make another move or two in free agency. They have yet to sign a player outside of their own organization, which is impressive to say the least. It is possible that they decide against signing a wide receiver, and keep the job in-house for second-year receiver Jeff Janis.

All of that being said, Welker would be a very solid fit with the Packers’ offense and it could be exactly what his career needs to turn itself back around.
