One more NFL free agent is off the market, as reports are out that defensive end Greg Hardy has agreed to terms with the Dallas Cowboys, according to Pro Football Talk. Hardy had previously been linked to the Seahawks and Bucs, with the Seahawks link turning into a flaming hot rumor that defensive end Michael Bennett wanted out of Seattle. It was later assumed to be Hardy and Bennett’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, trying to get leverage for Hardy. The Seahawks denied it and Bennett never commented.
Based on talent alone, there’s no doubt the Cowboys need a guy just like Hardy. The former Panthers defensive end is fast, strong and speedy, and that’s just on the pass rush. He’s also just as good at stopping run plays. Every team needs an elite pass rusher, just look at the Seahawks and the aforementioned Bennett. Bennett was incredibly disruptive at the line and in the backfield all season. That’s what the Cowboys want. Hardy only played in one game last year, but in 2013 he had 59 tackles and 15 sacks.
On the other side of the coin, Hardy brings a lot of baggage. A report from Pro Football Talk earlier on Wednesday before Hardy signed, quoted former teammates as calling him “unmanageable.” Former Panthers tight end Ben Hartsock told ESPN 103.3 FM that teams should think hard about what they’re getting with Hardy. Hartsock said that Hardy is not the same person on a consistent basis. He said Hardy can be cool, levelheaded and a regular guy, but then other times when he’s unmanageable. Hartstock went on to say he thinks that’s why Hardy’s been in trouble off the field.
Hartsock said that he thinks Hardy will be on a very short leash due to the way the league and teams are frowning more heavily on off the field problems. He’s not wrong and it will be interesting to see what kind of numbers the Cowboys gave him.
