Hampton clinched the No. 16 seed with their win in the “First Four” against Manhattan.
Now, they go from Manhattan to the team that is looking to be the first undefeated team since 1976.
They are facing a Kentucky team that has shown no signs of slowing down and a team that has several NBA prospects.
Still, Hampton Pirates coach Edward Joyner Jr. knows at the end of the day, the Wildcats are human just like his guys.
Joyner gave a candid response when he was asked what it is like to face the undefeated Wildcats.
Joyner responded by saying, “We all put our shorts on the same way.”
Joyner is right to not show any fear, Kentucky is just as human as any other team. Their incredible skill and ability to roll through teams is another story however and one Hampton better be prepared to deal with on Thursday.
A No. 16 seed has never knocked off a No. 1 seed in the history of March Madness and it’s hard to envision the Pirates taking a down a Kentucky team that is on the cusp of doing something that hasn’t been seen in almost 40 years.
Joyner is smart to say what he did as he doesn’t want his team to feel any more pressure than they already do before going up against No. 1.
Kentucky has a shot at greatness, but at the end of the day, Joyner’s words are true, they do put their shorts on just like everyone else.
They also just might roll through Hampton as well.
