The Mariners are known for making epic commercials and apparently 2015’s batch is no different. The commercials were released on Wednesday, and according to bullpen pitcher Charlie Furbush, they’re “pretty epic.” The commercials were filmed at the Peoria Sports Complex in Arizona in February and are a collaboration between the team and Seattle-based ad agency Copacino + Fujikado, according to a story by the Tri-City Herald.
There are four total spots, the most epic of which is the Nelson Cruz spot. Entitled “where did it go”, the spot has first baseman Logan Morrison explaining to new outfielder Nelson Cruz that reliever Fernando Rodney’s arrows are actually real, just invisible. Cruz might be reading off cue cards and thus his stoic, wooden performance, or, as For The Win suggests, he’s actually pulling off a genius method acting stunt replicating Christopher Walken. In fact, just replace Cruz’s lines with Walken’s voice in your head as FTW suggests. It works, really.
I now totally believe that Cruz spent forever getting into this role to make sure that his pregnant pauses reflected his character’s realistic view on the world and Rodney’s arrow to compliment Morrison’s adorable optimism.
The other three commercials are sort of a let-down after the Cruz one. We have catcher Mike Zunino taking a selfie with some starting pitchers, but leaving out Felix because he’s too intense, or something. Another one with Robinson Cano hitting line drives to locations dictated by Howard Johnson and some others. At one point, manager Lloyd McClendon walks by and has Cano hit towards a guy about to put a flier on McClendon’s car.
The last one has Furbush and Tom Wilhelmson playing big-haired head-bangers as the spot features clips of Kyle Seager’s defensive skills. The two apparently generated so much extra footage that the Mariners decided to make a music video along with the commercial.
